Daily reflections on rationality, emotional balance, and inner freedom
A Rationalist’s Diary is more than just a book—it is an inner journey designed to accompany you throughout an entire year. Its structure allows you to move toward a more conscious, freer state of mind and way of life by reading only one or two pages a day. In these pages, rationalism is presented not merely as a philosophical doctrine but as a worldview and a way of living. The wisdom of Stoic philosophy, the practicality of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and the depth of neuroscience are woven into every entry. This unique combination will help you identify your automatic thoughts and irrational beliefs, understand the neurobiology and physiology of emotional reactions, uncover their true causes, and find a path toward restoring inner discipline and critical thinking – even in moments of the most intense emotions. This book is intended for those who wish to live without illusions, whether created by their own minds or by others, and for those who choose rationality as a cornerstone of life.
This book was born out of a need to reflect, understand, and rebuild. A Rationalist’s Diary is an attempt to integrate psychology, philosophy, psychotherapy, and neurobiology as practical tools for navigating the often confusing and sometimes discouraging situations and themes of everyday life. Modern people are burdened not only by responsibilities but also by information. In such conditions, reflection on one’s thoughts, emotions, and behavioral motivations is often pushed aside.
The purpose of this book is to foster and strengthen a rational approach and critical thinking as essential life strategies. That is why I chose to call it A Rationalist’s Diary. According to the perspective presented here, being rational is not a matter of cold calculation but the ability to live authentically while grounded in critical reflection. Rationality does not oppose emotion; rather, it becomes an inner compass that integrates emotion with critical analysis, choice with scientific understanding, and behavior with responsibility.
I chose the diary format because the pace of modern life often leaves little room for reading long, systematic texts. This format offers a valuable alternative: one or two pages a day that provide a prompt and a stimulus for the mind. Read, reflect, connect the ideas to your own life, and gradually transform rational thinking into a practical habit. Each entry creates a space where you decide your own perspective. Interwoven throughout the book are my experiences as a psychotherapist with more than eighteen years of practice, recent discoveries in neuroscience, the core ideas of Roman Stoicism, and lessons drawn from everyday life. A Rationalist’s Diary is written for those who have grown tired of dogmatic truths and pseudoscientific beliefs; for those who wish to live not in self-deception but in an environment of rationality and meaning; and finally, for those who are not afraid to ask themselves: “Why do I think this way?” or “Why do I react this way?” And if even a single idea found within these pages becomes a tool that helps untangle one of your inner knots, somewhere on this planet a little psychologist will quietly smile 🙂
